Cambridge Airport Taxi: Colleges, Science Parks and Stansted Runs

A direct train links Cambridge to Stansted Airport in about half an hour, yet plenty of travellers still book a Cambridge airport taxi for that run. The reasons are practical: 4am pickups, college staircases, heavy luggage, and fares that never move once booked. Get an instant fixed quote and the price is locked in.

The 4am Stansted run: why the first train doesn't help

Stansted is Cambridge's most-used airport, 31 miles down the M11, and the dawn flight wave is relentless: Ryanair and easyJet schedule a heavy block of departures between 6am and 7.30am. To make one, you need to be at the airport around 4am.

The first direct trains out of Cambridge leave around 4.45am, which puts you at Stansted after 5.15am, too late for a 6am departure once check-in and security are factored in. There is no night service. So the 4am to 5.15am pickup window, the busiest of the day for Cambridge airport taxis, exists because the railway simply does not cover it. A pre-booked taxi collects you from your door at 4am, runs the M11 direct from Junction 11 to Junction 8, and has you at the terminal in 35 to 45 minutes.

College staircases and pedestrian streets: Cambridge pickups done right

Cambridge is not a normal pickup town. Several central streets, including Trinity Street and King's Parade, are pedestrianised during the day, and college porters control access to staircases and courts. A driver cannot simply pull up outside your college room.

When you book, give the college name and, if you know it, the porters' lodge or the nearest street where loading is permitted. Drivers agree the exact meeting point with you in advance: often a porters' lodge, a side street, or the hotel forecourt. This applies to university buildings, the Cambridge Science Park, the Biomedical Campus and Addenbrooke's Hospital alike. The details you add at booking are what make a Cambridge pickup work.

Cambridge to the airports: drive times and routes

  • Stansted: 31 miles, 35 to 45 minutes via the M11 (J11 to J8)
  • Luton: about 32 miles, 40 to 50 minutes via the A14 and M1
  • Heathrow: about 65 miles, 90 to 110 minutes via the M11 and M25
  • Gatwick: about 110 miles, around 2 to 2.5 hours via the M11, M25 and M23
  • London City: about 60 miles, 90 minutes to 2 hours via the M11

All times assume normal traffic. The M11 southbound between Junctions 11 and 8 and the M25 interchange are the two spots where delays bite, which is why drivers allow contingency on Heathrow and Gatwick runs. Your fare stays fixed regardless.

Train, coach or taxi from Cambridge: which actually works?

For Stansted in the daytime, the direct train is genuinely good: around 30 minutes from Cambridge station, no changes. It loses its edge with heavy luggage, with children, in a group of three or more, or for any flight outside railway hours. For Heathrow, the train means London and the Tube or Heathrow Express, which turns a 90-minute drive into a two-and-a-half-hour journey with two changes and a suitcase on every escalator.

The taxi's case is simple: one vehicle, your door, the terminal doors, no changes, and a fare fixed before you set off. For the Cambridge to Luton airport run, where the rail route also runs via London, the taxi usually wins on both time and convenience.

Question & Answers

In the daytime, the direct train takes about 30 minutes against 35 to 45 by road, so it can be marginally quicker. The taxi wins on every other measure: door-to-door pickup, no luggage hauling through stations, service at 4am, and a fixed fare for groups.
We collect from the nearest permitted point, agreed with you in advance: usually a porters' lodge or an adjacent street, since central streets are pedestrianised during the day. Add your college and staircase details in the booking notes.
Yes. The Cambridge Science Park, the Biomedical Campus, Addenbrooke's and the surrounding business parks are regular pickup points, including early-morning Heathrow runs.
Two large cases plus hand luggage is comfortable. For more, or for items like bike boxes and skis, book the estate or people carrier so nothing is left behind.
Give your flight number when you book and, if the flight is delayed, let the office know so the booking can be changed. Delays of up to an hour are accommodated; if the company has to cancel, the full amount is refunded to the same card. You get 45 minutes of free waiting after your flight lands (airport pickups only), then £10 per 30 minutes after that.
Yes. Every route works both ways on the same fixed-fare basis. The driver meets you at the designated pickup point at the scheduled time, identifies themselves on arrival with a name board and contacts you directly; if you can't find the driver, customer support helps by phone or messaging.
You get the exact price when you book: enter your Cambridge pickup, Stansted, date and time in the quote form and the fixed fare appears instantly. It stays the same whatever the M11 does.
Once your Cambridge booking is confirmed, our driver monitors your journey and arrives on time with a meet-and-greet service.
