Stansted's single terminal is genuinely convenient. One arrivals hall, one departures entrance, no terminal lottery. Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and the other carriers all use the same building, so your driver never has to guess.

The forecourt is where attention is needed. The Express Set Down area costs £10 for up to 15 minutes; overstay past 15 minutes and you pay £28 instead. Re-entering within 30 minutes also costs £28. The system is barrierless, cameras record every plate, and payment is due online by midnight the next day. The M11 is usually kinder than the M25, but the approach roads around the airport clog when several low-cost flights land together, which is most of the day at Stansted.

Early departures are Stansted's speciality. Ryanair's first wave leaves before 7am, which means 4am pickups from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Those are pre-booked by nature: no rank queue, no app gamble at that hour, just a driver assigned the day before who arrives a few minutes early.

The Stansted Express runs to London Liverpool Street in about 45 to 50 minutes and is a solid option if you live near Liverpool Street or on its Tube connections, travel light, and land while trains are running. It is also priced per person, which matters for groups.

Late flights add one more consideration: Stansted's express pick-up area charges for short stays, and overstaying gets expensive fast. Stansted's last Stansted Express departures leave Liverpool Street late in the evening, and after that the railway offers little. Delayed evening flights land into an airport where the train option has already gone home. Night coaches exist but they run to fixed stops on fixed timetables, which is no help if your house is in Harpenden and the coach goes to Victoria.
